Reading and Math Programs
Improve Reading / Math: Reading Plus, Visagraph
Reading Assessment System, Special Education
Learning disorders that involve reading speed
and the ability to perform calculations
are considered to be left-brain related. The right-brain would control reading comprehension and math reasoning. If a child is struggling with math calculation and/or didactic reading, we approach
the problem as a left-brain issue.
Brainchild Achievement Center provides treatment programs designed to help improve
children's learning disorders that involve reading speed
and the ability to perform calculations caused by a
neurological imbalance of the hemispheres of the brain.
Addressing Reading Issues
The reading program we use is called Reading Plus, a home-based, software-generated
program that focuses on the fundamental eye movements needed to read efficiently.
Reading is a complex process that involves
close interaction among visual, perceptual, and cognitive
functions. A child with poor visual skills and perceptual inaccuracies
will have trouble understanding and retaining what they learn
because brain function focuses on text
processing, rather than comprehension.
Reading Plus® has achieved
extensive, documented success in producing substantial
gains in fluency in silent reading, comprehension, vocabulary,
and overall reading proficiency for thousands of students in
grades three through college.
Reading Plus® utilizes the Visagraph® Reading
Assessment System to map the child's eye movements while they're reading dynamically.
With the Visagraph, we can:
-
Detect visual, perceptual, and information processing deficiencies that hinder reading development
-
Identify instructional modifications of Reading Plus® remediation system
-
Motivate children by providing visual representations of
"how" they read
-
Track patients' interim progress and overall achievement of reading goals within Reading Plus®

The assessment information is incorporated into
the Reading Plus software to establish a baseline for a
independent reading program for the child to perform at home. The
child logs into Reading Plus via the internet. Generally, the
program consists of 40 sessions over a 16 week period.
We then repeat the Visagraph assessment to
determine the changes in the child's fundamental eye movement during reading.

Addressing Math Issues
For our Math Improvement Program, we have a special education teacher on staff to specifically design an individual program to improve a child's math function.
We address these problems from a left-brain
standpoint and design treatments to specifically target the areas of the brain that control
and regulate these functions.
